Landing in LEJ

I was supposed to catch the 9:30am flight to LEJ (Leipzig) but, due to an air traffic controller strike (I guess it doesn’t just happen in Greece!), I was rescheduled to the 12:30pm flight. A bummer, but not awful, except for the life of my sleep-deprived brain I could not figure out where I was supposed to re-check in and if I’d need to get my checked bags or not. Some sniffling and wandering around later, I found the Lufthansa ticketing counter and they said everything had been changed and checked through automatically, and there was nothing I needed to do unless I wanted to take the train there instead. Are you listening, all the rest of you airlines?!?! Sheesh.

After a nice nap on some benches, everything went smoothly and I finally met Peter in the LEJ airport. Hooray! Our hotel (SchlafGut, cute!) is closer to the train station so I get to drop everything off – except the candy, of course. Then we hike a bit to his apartment, where I truly appreciate how small his kitchen is for the first time (two burners on top of a minifridge, next to the sink, no oven). His room is big enough, but the bed is only juuust big enough for Peter, and not very comfortable besides. So we won’t be staying there!

Thursdays are meat truck days, or at least when a roving rotisserie van parks near his apartment, so we got some schweinhocken (crispy pork shank!) and caught up on the Daily Show and Colbert Report with his roommate David. David’s from Florida and is working in the same lab, and is a very nice guy! It seems to be a lucky pairing since they both speak English and have similar interests.

The pork was just a prelude to dinner; we got a doner (very like gyros) at Doner City on the way back to the hotel. This is one of the two doner places Peter and David frequent, and they are huge things to eat! Tasty though. Except Peter dropped a coin when paying for them and it bounced into one of the sauces under the sneeze guard…oops, but impressive!

After walking around a very tiny bit, we went back to the hotel for a whopping twelve hours of sleep! I definitely needed it, and I think twelve hours is quite enough to reset your internal clock; Peter must have also been tired!
