Melissa goes to Germany

In case you’ve forgotten (though it’s hard for me to forget), Peter is doing a six-month research internship in Leipzig. He left in November and, with the exception of having been in Delaware for Christmas, won’t be back home until May. A lot of his lab is going to a conference in California this week, which is terribly convenient as it’s also a perfect time to break up his being gone by going over to visit him!

Other than getting some American candy and other requested items for Peter, one of the biggest thinking-ahead things I did for this trip was to rent a Kindle from the university library. I didn’t know you could do that, but they come preloaded with a bunch of books – specifically, the Hunger Games trilogy, which I really wanted to read but had a ridiculous waiting list (for both real and ebook rentals) from the public library system. Booyah. I rented it out three days before my flight, however, which was very dangerous; instead of packing in the evenings, I was staying up late reading the first two books! They were serious pageturners. Oops…

Somehow I ended up at the airport with a proper amount of luggage anyway, and even took a break to do some work during my long layover in Philly (sunny and 60s, whoa!) and also – kind of hilariously – book hotel, airfare and registration for the Engineers Without Borders international conference in Las Vegas this year. Thank goodness for smartphones. Turns out, Nationals really likes our Ecuador project and wanted to give us an award. Due to the cost of the conference, none of us had planned on going, but if we were going to get an award it seemed worth it! Plus, sneakily, I was hoping to scope out the job market, and that’s the best place to do it versus the regional workshops I’ve attended (for four years now! Eek!). More on that in a future post!

I did leave my jacket in the airport when boarding for Frankfort, though, and had to sprint back off in the nick of time to get it – not the most settling start to a long flight! But I remembered, and did not become a frozen Melissa, so that’s good. The flight was pretty empty so I had the two seats by the window all to myself, woohoo. More work was done, more kindle was read, and some big bang theory was watched. Also I suppose I had a nap…
